A couple of friends and I have teamed up and launched a new blog - the Secret Sewing Society. Would love you to come and check it out. Our goal is to have a well rounded blog for the new quilter with lots of tips and tricks to get you started on your quilting journey, and also inspiration and challenges for the seasoned quilter.
One of my favourite aspects so far is our Do Your Block challenge. We have all been playing around on EQ7 lately and have set a challenge block each month that we are to use as inspiration for a modern quilt design. This month is the Priscilla Block. And these were my designs that I created from this block. This one I called Priscilla Does Cartwheels. I modified the block so the points didn't meet in the corners.

This next one is the same block but some of the blocks have been rotated and the coloured differently.

The next one is my favourite. I modified the original block so they were rectangular instead of square and I love how this one turned out.

Thank you to the lovely Michelle from Little Hero Hosting who rescued me and my little blog from the Google abyss! I can definitely recommend her for all techy, bloggy website things that I (and perhaps you) know nothing about.

Last time I was here I was participating in the 29 Faces Challenge and it was a real challenge (really, really hard!!) drawing a face a day for the whole month. Amazingly though I really think my drawing improved a great deal in that month.

These are a few of the ones that I really liked. If you want to have a look at the rest, click on the Instagram link in the sidebar.
If you follow me on instagram you will know what I mean. Anyway I stumbled across the 29 Faces challenge and decided to just go for it. The idea is to create a face every day for the month of February with an extra one thrown in somewhere I guess. I have recently broken in my new art journal and it is my new best friend.
Here are my Day 1 and day 2 faces. I started with a quick sketch and went from there.
The aim of the charity is to provide a special pillowcase for those children in hospitals around Australia also suffering though this dreadful disease.
My sewjo took an extended vacation!
Actually I have done a little but the project went on a little trip and I don't have it back yet and only have really bad photos.
I haven't been reading any blogs either so I have an awful lot to catch up on!

In the meantime I have discovered the glorious world of mixed media art and I LOVE IT!!! And it's kind of quicker than sewing a quilt ;)

There will be more quilting I promise. My little boy starts Kindy this year so I will have some CHILD FREE TIME! A few new quilt designs are on the cards.

Anyway I found this wonderful pile of fabric that I was saving for who knows what. Its Pat Bravo's Dreaming in French collection and I thought well there's no point leaving it in a box in a cupboard - let's use it! I am just hoping I have enough for the whole project.

So after a slightly delayed start (we went fishing and the only thing we caught were pippies which got the kids (and me) quite excited) I finished the January block last night and managed to finish the February block today, while my 3 year old had a much needed nap. The colours are much truer in the picture at right rather than the blocks. Not sure what happened there. And yes I do need to iron better.

I do have a rather large pile of largeish offcuts from the blocks. Maybe I should cut the starting strips smaller so there is not as much wastage. Any ideas peeps?

I am quite pleased with myself and I am thinking this method of blog your goal for the day may work in the future. A bit like writing a list for lots of people to see and shaming yourself into doing it so you don't look like a big wally :)
Thanks to everyone who has visited and taken the time to comment. Your lovely comments mean a lot. So my advice to fellow bloggers who are on a bit of a downer - BLOG!! It is amazing what a bit of encouragement can do for the soul.

So I thought I would take advantage of my returning motivation and post this morning what I <strike>hopefully plan to</strike> WILL accomplish today.

I joined in the Lucky Star BOM at Don't Call me Betsy and today I am going to sew the first 2 blocks! I was originally going to make it an all solids quilt but I've decided to join in AJ's Sew Your Stash Thin 2013

So with that in mind I am going to use fabrics from my stash. So my Lucky Stars won't be exactly what I wanted but I'm sure I will be able to find something I like from the stash, right??

One thing I haven't shared is the one handmade gift I did actually finish before Christmas. This tablerunner that I made for hubby's Mum.

I don't know how something so relatively simple became such a pain in the butt! It started out ok. Came up with the design, made some half square triangles using some of my favourite Amy Butler fabric, sewed it all together and then it just went downhill from there.

For the small pinwheel blocks I had used a very similar colour fabric as in the large blocks so the pattern just seemed to get lost and just looked a right old mess. Anyway instead of just making 4 new small blocks I decided to sew some sashing strips between the blocks. A whole lot of unpicking and resewing later and I had blocks that didn't line up and something that was starting to resemble more o a tablecloth than a runner. So I unpicked all that bloody sashing, made 4 more small pinwheel blocks and sewed it all back together.

And now this is the part where I get to quilt it right?? Wrong! One of the triangle pieces along the outside didn't meet the edge and not just by a tincy wincy bit but by about a quarter inch, my seam allowance! Many, many swear words later I though what if I unpick one side and then try to stretch it to fit. Guess what?? Didn't work so I unpicked the whole triangle and sewed it back in and the bloody thing still didn't meet up. Would anyone else have ripped it to shreds by now?! When my sanity returned, I cut out a new ( extra large) triangle piece, sewed it in and thank goodness it worked.

It has a pieced back and I quilted using straight lines and then used a pieced binding with the scraps of fabric that were left over. I love the pieced binding. I am going to do this more often!

I think it looks ok. I have never ever unpicked this much in my life and will never ever do so again. The whole project probably took twice as long as it should have but I am quite impressed with myself for not chopping it into small pieces and throwing it in the bin! And best of all is my husband's mum likes it and it is now on her dining room table. (unless of course she whips it out just before we visit and throws it in the cupboard as soon as we leave!)

Lessons learned:
1. Spend more time planning and cutting accurately instead of going guns blazing into a project.
2. If you are unpicking a lot, make sure you have bandaids handy so when you stab yourself multiple times with the pointy bit of the unpicker you don't bleed all over your fabric.
3. Buy new quick unpick as the old one is now worn out.

Oh and I must share these. My little peeps are huge Peppa Pig fans so I appliqued some T-shirts for them. The sewing is absolutely atrocious as I was having a 'not in the mood for sewing day' and it usually looks crap then. Most of the time I would match my thread colour to the fabric and if you are doing raw edge applique and can't sew straight this is what you would do, but I was trying to be clever, for as anyone whose kids watch Peppa Pig will know all the characters have a kind of darker outline around them. I would lone to do a whole quilt af all the little characters. I think it would look fantastic.
11 THINGS ABOUT ME:

I am an Aussie and grew up in the small coastal town of Yeppoon in Queensland which lies just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Just off the coast of Yeppoon lies Great Keppel Island which is part of the Great Barrier Reef.

Main beach in Yeppoon

Now that I have lived in the city (Brisbane, Qld which is not a big city) I would love to return to the quiet life of a country town!

I am a trained beauty therapist and massage therapist.

My real job (besides being a mum!) is my home-based Spray Tanning business which allows me to stay home with the kids.

I love all types of craft! Before I took up quilting I was totally into jewellery making and took a number of classes in Precious Metal Clay, Dichroics, Wire Jewellery and my favourite class ever was learning how to make lampwork beads.

I would like to learn book binding, glass slumping and lead lighting.

I like to bake but really detest planning and making meals!

I am a bad housekeeper.

I read way too much when I'm not sewing, hence the bad housekeeping.

I love 80's music.

I would love to own/run a sewing and craft cafe one day.

Lisa's questions for me:

What is the most memorable book you have read? Can't think of just one of the top of my head but Dick Francis is my all time favourite author so anything he has written. I am a sucker for fiction so hope you weren't expecting 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' or something along those lines ;) although I'm sure it's good.

What are you reading right now? Close to the Bone by Stuart MacBride. Would you recommend it? Yes. If you like crime thrillers, Stuart MacBride is amazing.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be? Paleontologist or Archaeologist.

The song/group playing in your music player right now is... The Ultimate 80's

What is your favourite animal and why? Frogs. I have always loved them, despite the slime!

Why do you like to quilt? It's fun!!

Favourite meal to cook and for whom? Well I hate cooking meals but I guess it would have to be Satay Chicken Noodles as both my kids think it's yummy.

What was the last thing you learned? I recently attended a Resin bangle workshop. It was fantastic. Another very addictive craft that I can see myself doing more of in the future.

What was the last thing you taught someone? When I attended the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair I was demonstrating Raw Edge applique technique, so hopefully someone learnt something from that.

Your favourite colour is? Raspberry of course!

What was your best trip ever or one you would like to go on? My dream trip would be visiting all the ancient ruins around the globe.

Chrissie's questions for me:

Are you in a Quilt Guild, if you are then tell us about it. Have just started the South West Brisbane MQG with my friend AJ. Our first meeting is this Sunday the 13th January. Very, very excited!
What's the longest you've lived somewhere and where was it? My hometown of Yeppoon in Queensland. I lived there until I was 26 and then I moved to Brisbane.
What's your favourite item that you've ever made and why? Definitely the first quilt I made which is mentioned in this post - my Kokeshi Doll quilt that I made for my daughter. I still love it and it was so exciting to have it featured in Homespun magazine.

What books do you have by your bed? Lot's of Stuart MacBride, Karen Rose, Mo Hayder and of course tonnes of quilting books and mags.
What do your friends and family think about you quilting? My kids think Mummy is 'cool' because I make things. ( I'm hoping that when they are older it will still be cool to make stuff) My husband in his own quiet way is supportive but I'm very sure hates the mess I leave everywhere. My parents, Mum especially and my Aunty Marilyn (who is a quilter) have been very excited for me the few times I have had a quilt published in Homespun magazine.
Where are you spending Christmas day this year and who with? Husband's family.
When did you buy your first sewing machine? I can't actually remember, in my late teens sometime. Up until then I was using my Grandma's old machine.
Why did you start blogging? For a few reasons. Mainly to get to know other bloggers and to encourage myself to stop procrastinating and continue with designing more quilts.
Who is your favourite actor/actress and what is the best role you've seen them in? I'd have to say Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption and I love Ed Burns too.
How/where do you store your fabric? Umm...that would probably be all over the house although I do try to keep it contained to one large cupboard but it just seems to escape.
What's the best hair style you've ever had and why? That would be my Princess Di hair in the 80's as I could go to bed and get up the next day and it still looked the same as I used so much hairspray to keep it in place.

I am tagging these lovely ladies:

Ange @ Heart of Charnwood
AJ @ AJ's Antics
Mandy @ Fell 4 U
And I am quite sure there were a few others but hotmail seems to have deleted the emails from those who were going to participate and it's been so long since I was going to the write this post I have forgotten. Sorry ladies, but if this was you let me know and I will add you to the list.

My questions for you are:

What is your second favourite craft after quilting/sewing(if you have one)?
If you had the chance to change one thing you have done in your life what would it be?
If you were an animal, what would you be?
What is your all time favourite movie?
What is your favourite book/author?
What is next on your to-do list of things to learn?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Why did you start blogging?
What is your favourite item you have ever made and why?
Who do you admire most in quilting blog land and why?
What is the most interesting place you have visited or would like to visit?

I had decided that morning I was never going to have 25 kids at a party ever again (too stressful) but they all had a great time making flower wands (the girls) and monsters on a stick (the boys) and of course we can't forget pass the parcel and a great big lolly hunt. I am so glad I used my old tablecloth for the craft table as now it is glued and glittered and I have just found out it doesn't come out in the wash.
It was 33 degrees but luckily the buttercream icing stayed on the cake and didn't end up in a puddle on the table! And speaking of the cake, I had seen all these awesome ombre cakes on Pinterest and have wanted to make one for ages and it worked! I have to say it's probably the best cake I have ever made and I am seriously in love with it.
Happy birthday my gorgeous girl.Gillian Grimmetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11913814645119678560noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221465491435958335.post-32085894816563475512012-11-24T22:18:00.001+10:002012-11-26T18:36:43.848+10:00Paper Napkin bunting tutorialWell this is it. My first tutorial.

My son was having a pirate party for his 3rd birthday and I looked everywhere for pirate party decorations but couldn't find anything. Then at the last minute I found some pirate paper napkins and next thing you know we have some party decorations that took no time at all. Now I'm not saying this hasn't been done before, but this is how I did it and who knows, someone out there may find it helpful.

It is my daughter's 6th birthday this friday and I've talked her into a fairy party so I can make some more pretty bunting! (Much better than the Hotel Transylvania party she originally wanted).

So if you'd like to make some bunting of your own, all you need is some paper napkins and a roll of crepe paper streamer. Oh and a sewing machine of course! I actually used two packs of 20 napkins as I needed lots of bunting.

Now you need to cut the napkins into flags. Take the folded napkin and making sure the fold is at the top, line it up on your cutting mat to find the middle of the napkin. Then cut from the bottom middle of the napkin to the top of one side. Do the same on the other side. Your napkin should look like this.

Now unfold the napkin and separate the two halves. (Anybody have any good tips for cleaning cutting mats??)

Repeat this step with all your remaining napkins. I usually cut 3 or 4 at once to save time. Then fold each separated diamond back in half so you have some lovely little penants.

Now comes the sewing part. You will need a tail left on either end of the bunting so you can tie it up. I left about a metre of streamer at the start before I began to sew the flags. Start by folding the streamer in half lengthways just far enough so you can insert the first flag and sew it in between the two sides of the streamer. Drop the rest of the roll of crepe paper on the floor and it easily unrolls as you sew. I also increased my stitch length to 4 on my machine just to make it sew up a bit quicker.

I found it helpful to stretch the crepe paper as I sewed and this stopped it puckering and also helped to fold the streamer in half ready for the next flag. Now insert the next flag right next to the last one and continue sewing.

Repeat this step until you have used all the flags. Make sure to leave another long tail at the other end. And you should end up with something like this.

Two packs of napkins made approximately 13metres of bunting (with 80 flags) plus the metre we left on each end. You could also use less flags and leave a gap between each one and it would still look great. So for a grand total of $6.00 - $2.50 for each pack of napkins and $1 for the streamer - you have some fabulous party decorations. And it's super fast too. I think it only took about a half hour to make.

Here's a few photos of the pirate bunting I made in July. These ones were even easier as I just unfolded the napkin and cut it in half so I didn't lose any of the picture. I also left a space between each flag as I only had one pack of napkins.

So if you ever need some super quick, last minute party decorations this may be your answer. And best of all they can be used again and again.
I was visiting Beth's blog and she makes little mini quilts to practice her free motion quilting. Great idea and why have I not thought of it?? So I did a little raw edge applique and now it's ready to be quilted. And the best news is the postman finally delivered my Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters book yesterday so now I can fmq to my heart's content once I actually decide on a design.
I'm pretty excited as it's my first ever attempt at EPP. (Please disregard my really disgusting cutting mat!) It probably would have been a really good idea to use a thread colour that blended as I can see some lovely black stitching showing up on my white hexies. But there's always next time i guess.

And a little something that made me laugh. My 3 year old son comes running up to me and says, "Mummy guess what? I have a tampon!" And I say "YOU'VE GOT A WHAT?" absolutely horrified that he could actually say the word and seemed to know what one was. "I've got a tampon!" he says excitedly as he shows me his hand. "See a tampon!" So it finally dawned on me that he was saying he had a STAMP ON. He has a bit of trouble with 'S' at the beginning of some words. I got a good chuckle out of it and he thought it was pretty hilarious that Mummy thought he was so funny.
The sweetest words ever uttered in reference to a sewing project!

The lining is done and as it is bright yellow I will never lose anything in my bag. I now wish I had of added a few pockets on the inside as some other bloggers have but I just wanted to finish it and I was too lazy. I neglected to take a photo of the inside as we were in our way to the coast and I just didn't get time. The one thing I don't like about the lining is that it is very floppy and despite using a 3/4 inch seam allowance as it says in the pattern it still seems like there is still too much fabric. If I did it again I would interface the lining too.

Well blog finished anyway as I still have to sew in the lining.

I had originally planned to use a red and yellow spot fabric but thought I didn't have enough. But I mulled over it for a bit and with a little scrimping it worked! I ended up sewing the handles differently and used a red solid on the inside of the handle so I would have enough of the spot for the piping. I had to piece a lot of short bias strips together to make it long enough for the piping. But I'm so excited that I got to use this fabric as I think it gives it a more retro comic feel and I absolutely love my bag!!

The zipper went in great, although my top stitching was slightly wonky so I had to unpick part of it and restitch it. I never used to unpick anything but I must be getting anal in my old age. The piping now that was another story. I have sewn in piping before on dresses but it was quite a challenge sewing it into the bag with all the layers on fabric, peltex and interfacing. I think if I ever make another one I may skip the piping part. The size 16 jeans needle made most of it a breeze to stitch. I only broke one needle which I though was pretty amazing.

Now I just need a good movie or tv show to sit and watch while I sew in the lining.

One tip though:

Don't let your 3 year old sit under the table while you are trying to stitch really slow through the multiple bag layers! Mine was. He said 'what's this Mummy?' and leans on the presser foot and I almost sew my fingers into my bag as the machine takes off! I thought my machine had gone mental until I realized what he had done.
Wednesday - whoops I mean thursday :)Ok so no progress on the Santa Sacks or my flower quilt :( I felt like I had lost my sewjo at the beginning of the week, perhaps due starting the Atkins diet and my lack of sugar leading to headaches and major tiredness!

I have made a start on my Wonder Woman Weekender. I was in a bit of a tizz over the bag too. I was so excited about it to begin with and then realized that I didn't have enough of the fabric I had chosen to use for the piping and handles (a super cool retro red and yellow spot). I only had a half metre so not enough and of course it was all gone from my fabric shop and I couldn't find any online either. Major bummer!

Anyway I don't know about everybody else but If you're like me when I have an idea of what I want to use it's so hard to find something else that looks right. I found a red and white spot which I don't like as much so I'm hoping I won't be disappointed when I finish (and considering I paid $28 a metre for it, I want it to look fanatstic!).

Here is the bag cut out with the handle/piping fabric. Would love any feedback on the fabric choice.
I am joining in the Long Weekend Blog Hop to make Amy Butler's Weekender Bag.

Despite having Style Stitches and In Stitches and a number of her patterns I have never made anything (just drooled over them), so I thought I'd jump right in with the weekender as I'm sure I need one! I was thinking of doing a patchwork one as I have seen some awesome ones but then I found the coolest Wonder Woman fabric and now I am pretty sure I need a Wonder Woman bag!

I'm still toying with the idea of a pieced bag. I bought the fabric to make my little wonder woman a dress and now I will have to go back and check out the rest of the super heroes just in case I need to buy those too to complete my Super bag!

Originally she was going to wear a Fijian grass skirt complete with coconuts but I couldn't find it anywhere. I think I may have, in a fit of madness, thrown it out. So after copious amounts of tears we decided that I was going to make a flag dress. This is the result.

I think it turned out pretty well and she actually liked it and has said she 'may wear it again' which is high praise indeed. Hearing that made it worth the effort and now my son wants a flag dress too so I'm sure I will see him parading around in it at some stage.
I was so chuffed the other day when my 5 year old said that she 'wants to be a maker like mummy when she grows up'!

Anyway I decided to make some reindeer appliques and I think I am going to use a denim for the sack. Will probably applique the kids names on too.
Another WIP that has been sitting around for a while are these:

Essentially twenty four 12 1/2" applique blocks which hopefully now that I have shown them will end up being a quilt for my daughter. They will be stitched using raw edge applique, with maybe a 1" wide sashing in between each block. Then I will add lots of embellishing on the flowers. That's the plan anyway. The photo is a bit flashed out so the colours aren't true.

In saying this I actually find the paisley free motion design one of the easier patterns to quilt but I am now sick to death of it.

I find stippling very difficult which is probably good as I don't really like the look of stippling anyway (probably because mine looks dreadful!). Anyway I thought it was high time I tried something different.

I was browsing on Craftsy and noticed Angela Walters online class Machine Quilting Negative Space. You may know her book Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters which I now need to buy as her online class is fantastic. She makes free motion quilting look incredibly easy and once you practice some of the designs they aren't as difficult as you may think. I highly recommend this class if you would like to learn about free motion quilting.

I had started a pink girly version of a rocket ship cushion at the craft and Quilt Fair and begun quilting it in paisley (of course) but after watching the class decided to change it up a bit and finish it off with a circle pattern and I think combining the patterns gives it a more interesting look (and it was definitely quicker to do). I think circles are my new favourite quilting design!!

I love the texture it has given to the piece by using the two different designs. Although if I had of taken this class before I started quilting this cushion I probably would have done it a bit differently so the paisley pattern didn't look like it was just plonked in the middle.

Angela seems to like combining different quilting designs and I think the effect is amazing. I feel so inspired that I want to keep quilting but I don't have any tops ready to quilt and don't want to waste my abundance of excitement on a practice quilt sandwich so I had better get my you know what into gear and make something to quilt!Gillian Grimmetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11913814645119678560noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221465491435958335.post-661836094469930612012-10-28T20:44:00.001+10:002012-10-29T05:23:18.887+10:00Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair 2012So the Craft and Quilt fair went really well after a very nervous start. It was lovely to meet and work with Robyn and Carolyn.

It was the strangest thing actually having people tell me they wanted to make my quilt. Strange in a good way! I spoke to one lovely lady on saturday who said she bought the magazine the day before and told me she had already begun making the spaceships.

Anyway in case you hadn't already guessed I had a really amazing time. I would love to do it again so I guess I had better think up some more designs :)

Somehow, despite being a home economics failure ( she got a C) she discovered her sewjo. Her first handmade outfit was a made from a lovely (hideous) mauve crushed satin kind of fabric, accessorised with a matching purple bow of gigantic proportions. It was the late 80's after all! How she loved that dress. But now there was no stopping her. An addiction was born. Glorious batwing tops, bubble skirts, peplums and multiple zipper numbers all in varying shades of polyester, crushed velvet and lace.

Somewhere along the way she lost her sewjo and discovered new and exciting crafts that took her fancy for a short while until she inevitably became bored and moved on to something else. Then came that day when she spied a gorgeous creation on a magazine cover! That magazine was Australian Homespun with one of Kellie Wulfsohn's quilts on the cover. 'That's a quilt?' she thinks. 'But quilting isn't fun, is it?' She buys the magazine. Does she make the quilt? No. She buys more magazines to drool over. She buys fabric. She hoards fabric. Does she make anything?? No.

'Wow. That might be fun to enter. I might make a quilt.' says the crazy person who has never in her life made a quilt. Then she thinks maybe I should start with something small, a tablerunner perhaps? No, it definitely has to be a quilt. It can't be that hard can it?

She feels that first flush of excitement of beginning a new and exciting project so the making of the quilt top goes quite quickly. Her sewjo is back.
